Not Perfect…The Dance Flop Diaries

To make mistakes is human; to stumble is commonplace; to be able to laugh at yourself is maturity. – William Arthur Ward

Way back when, one of my photography mentors caught me off guard with an intriguing question. “Would you like to learn what’s the secret of all great photographers, what makes them truly great?”. To which I swiftly replied, “Yes, master, show me the ways!” His answer was short and simple yet powerful: “They only show their good photos”.  Walking away, not saying another word, he drifted into the darkness, leaving my youthful brain confused and bewildered…

Well, it wasn’t as dramatic as that of course, I’m just trying to be a little poetic here…However, it did took me a while to figure it out. But one day, it clicked.

Nevertheless, I found myself recently going thru my archives and finding that there’s also a certain value in those perfectly imperfect moments during. Wether by the dancer’s mistakes or my own, outtakes and flops can serve a learning or simply humorous purpose. Because life is not perfect, and sometimes it’s good to take a look at those moments, if anything, for a healthy dose of reality.

With that in mind, I recently created a new Instagram account called @DanceFlopDiaries to share those very moments when things go awry but it’s just so hard not to look away and giggle a little bit. Enjoy!

If you can’t laugh at yourself, life is going to seem a whole lot longer than you’d like.

I am a HUGE fan of your work, Omar — and even more so now that you’ve shown you’re also humble, and that you have a wonderful sense of humor. I’m tempted to finally bite the bullet and get an Instagram account just so I can follow your “flops.” (For what it’s worth, even the so-called flops are works of art.)

To be more specific it was from another post, she is crouched inbetween two lines of traffic at night. Must have been quite a dangerous shoot
