Valencia, no filter…

April 15, 2019 by Omar Z Robles

Over the last few months I’ve started photographing more and more works on 35mm film. My latest series in Puerto Rico was shot entirely on 35mm film as well as this new one in Valencia, Spain. It all started a few months ago, when a client asked me to photograph a session for them strictly on analogue photography. I’m a kid of the digital renaissance. Though everything was still analogue when I was growing up, I’ve enjoyed being a part […]

Planting Seeds in Hollow Spaces, Puerto Rico.

February 4, 2019 by Omar Z Robles

As a visual artist, my work is directly affected by what I see. I do not draw inspiration from fantasy or imagination, but rather from what I  find right in front of me. Hence, whenever I travel and set myself to work on a series, I allow the environment to guide me into building the narrative of the series. While at times, that leads me to create joyful images, other times I’m lead to harsh realties, difficult to take in. […]

Melbourne, of Paradise.

July 27, 2018 by Omar Z Robles

“They understand, though they are poor. I’m like them. I love them, I know them. Their lives are small, but their dreams are vast.”-Baptiste, from the film The Children of Paradise. As I sit down to write this, it’s been exactly 11 days since I got back form Melbourne, Australia. I am still trying to get my biological clock back on track and catch full night of sleep. But I am happy to put myself through that for the experiences […]

Their Words, Bare Sky Dance Series.

July 1, 2018 by Omar Z Robles

The naked body speaks volumes to our fragile yet mystical and graceful existence. We are born naked and it was a naked act (in most cases) that brought life to each and everyone of us. Body language is our first language. We are tied to our bodies, in such a strong way that they can often tell things about our emotional state, even in spite of ourselves. As a photographer I am drawn to photograph the naked form for the […]

Buenos Aires, Querido

September 13, 2017 by Omar Z Robles

For years and years, I had been yearning of making my way to Argentina. Perhaps it was all the Carlos Gardel tangos my grandfather used to play when I was a kid. Or the irresistible and hypnotic tone of the Argentinean accent in Spanish. It so happened, while I was visiting Chile, the folks at the Buenos Aires Tourism Board got word I was in the vicinity and kindly offered me an invitation to spend 2 nights in Buenos Aires. […]

The Streets of Santiago.

September 2, 2017 by Omar Z Robles

On August 1, 2017, I arrived in Santiago, Chile. As a Fujifilm X-Photographer Ambassador, I was invited to be guest speaker at the brand’s official launch event in Chile. Once my engagements with the brand concluded, I stayed several days longer to spend time shooting local dancers. One of the questions people ask me frequently is why do I photograph dancers in the streets. Why not the studio or the theatre or nature? Photographing on the streets of Santiago, brought […]

Hong Kong’s Playground

March 29, 2017 by Omar Z Robles

The first time I traveled all by myself, I was 16 years old. At the airport my mom gave me a big hug and immediately broke into tears. As a teenager, I naturally thought that she was just being dramatic. It was only a short trip, to visit relatives nonetheless. Yet, for my mom it meant so much more. It was a rite of passage for her little boy. I was to head out into the world for the first […]

Fujifilm GFX 50S | Overview

January 19, 2017 by Omar Z Robles

I had the opportunity to test for some time a pre-production unit of the newly released Fujifilm GFX 50S. While I am not at all camera reviewer, I thought it would be useful to share about my experience since I am sure I will be getting a few questions on social media about it. This is thus not a review of the camera, but just my initial impressions after working with it for the type of work I do […]

In the land of the living, Mexico.

November 15, 2016 by Omar Z Robles

As I continue my quest to travel the world documenting dancers in different countries, my next destination after visiting Cuba last March was inspired partly by something I heard someone say not too long ago. Words that still echo in my mind, and I bet on a lot of other people’s minds. “When Mexico sends it’s people…”. The rest of that sentence is full of so much negativity and hate, I won’t even bother to repeat. And so it was, […]

En Cuba, se vive bailando. (Cuba, the ballet)

April 15, 2016 by Omar Z Robles

I found myself tangled between the rhythm of the ballerinas and the cadence of the Cubans that hit the streets, balancing their lives in an effort to make it through each and every day. I fell in love with that dance.
